The Next Train by Paul Asbury Seaman
Wednesday Nov 05, 2025
Wednesday Nov 05, 2025
The guest mix hit parade continues! Right on the heels of his last train mix Paul gives another train-themed set. This is one more in line with many of Paul's other train mixes in that it's main genre is berlin-school. I have been on a berlin-school bender all year so I am excited for this one.
Here's what Paul says about the mix:
"You’re sitting on a grassy slope above the cottage, looking out across the landscape below. It’s night and soft dots of light here and there indicate other houses, groups of houses, a road. In the distance you can see the black edge of a ruler, marking the gap between carriages and a bright bar of light moving left in front of it. Like happens in dreams, you are watching the scene and then you are in it, your seat tipped back, not quite asleep, you’re looking out the window. It’s a modern train. Gone is the classic click-click, click-click, but you can still feel the subtle rocking back and forth as the train hurtles silently forward. Under the stars. The cacophony of a station stop, made eerie in the wee hours of the morning. Or memory stirring up a previous adventure then returning you to your current tranquility."
Thanks, Paul, for another excellent entry in your continuing train series.

Late Night with Yorgos Dousos
Thursday Oct 30, 2025
Thursday Oct 30, 2025
Yorgos Dousos is a multi-instrumentalist and composer located in Athens. He plays flute and clarinet to combine Greek music tradition, European jazz, and ambient electronic into an inspired musical experience. I got to hear an advance copy of his latest album - LUPUS, Love Under Pain, Upon Suffering - I knew immediately that I had to reach out to Yorgos about a guest mix. And here it is!
Here's what Yorgos has to say about this set:
“Late Night” is a small map of where my head has been living while finishing my new record. It’s the hour when things get quieter, when the room feels bigger than it is and every sound has more weight. I wanted this mix to sit in that space where breath, memory, and repetition start to blur.
It opens with my own pieces (“Marisha” and “Breath” from "LUPUS, Love Under Pain, Upon Suffering") because that’s the emotional ground I’m working from lately. All of the tracks orbit the same questions I’m dealing with on the album: what it means for sound to feel physical and intimate but also distant and ghosted; how much you can say emotionally with or without melody; and where the human breath sits inside electronics and processing.
Thanks, Yorgos, for this excellent mix!

Amiably Ambient by Daniel Hawkins

We've had a nice run of guest mixes lately here at Low Light Mixes world headquarters. And that streak continues will a wonderful new set from Daniel Hawkins. Here his two previous guest mixes:
https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/dark-woods-by-daniel-hawkins/
https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/metallic-memories/
This mix has a perfect fall vibe. Here's what Daniel says about this collection of tracks:
"As I was saving some of the songs that I liked over the past few weeks, I noticed a bunch of them were guitar pieces - so I figured that was as good a reason as any to do a themed mix. For me the hardest part of doing the mixes is I end up with a lot of good music and have to make tough choices about what to cut from the final mix. There are just so many great musicians out there now doing superb work. So I just go slow and make changes - I think this is a cohesive mix with a nice flow - you be the judge."
Thanks, Daniel, for another excellent mix.
Cheers!

Pluvial Scansion - guest mix by Benoît Pioulard
Wednesday Jul 30, 2025
Wednesday Jul 30, 2025
I have said many times that I love hosting guest mixes. Whether it's from regular contributors Paul & Erwin or from artists in the ambient space, the mixes expose to new music and artists, and I delight in hearing how someone else approaches the creation of a coherent mix.
This new guest mix comes from an ambient artist that I have admired for years - Benoît Pioulard(Tom Meluch). I love his brand of hazy, dreamy ambient music. He has an excellent new album out, which you can find here - https://pioulard.bandcamp.com/album/stanza-iv It's one of my favorite ambient albums of the year so far.
The title of this mix is Pluvial Scansion, about which Tom says - "It’s been a rainy spring and summer here, so I think that’s affected some of the overall mood." Here's what he has to say about putting together this mix:
"For this mix, I wanted to highlight the work of some very talented friends, and some mellower releases from the past year or so that I've enjoyed during various moments of transit or deep focus. Every track has some form of ambient washiness, and I tried to cover as much of a sonic range as possible within that framework. My latest release is Stanza IV, a limited LP complemented by a collection of reworks by Markus Guentner, James Devane, MJ Guider, arovane, Clarice Jensen, and Viul.
Here, I've included an abridged version of one of the album tracks, along with the arovane piece, but you can hear the whole thing at pioulard.bandcamp.com, and subscribe for a ton of exclusive work plus new stuff every month, at pioulard.bandcamp.com/subscribe .. and, if you're in Tokyo on August 18th, come see me perform with Satomimagae! Hope you'll enjoy the playlist <3
Thanks for this well-crafted collection.
Cheers!

Berlin School EM Summer 2025 Update
Wednesday Jul 23, 2025
Wednesday Jul 23, 2025
The king of berlin-school music returns with another stellar mix. Our friend, Erwin Boers, was nice enough to put together a follow up to his spring EM mix with this excellent summer update.
Here what he says about this latest set:
"For this summer update in the synth-cosmic-Berlin School-electronic-music scene, I faced the same problem as a few months ago with the spring update: a heterogeneous bunch of tracks in a wide variety of moods, rhythms and styles. This time, to produce a coherent mix, I figured telling the "story" of a journey into outer space - not very original I know... ;-)
Starting with a couple of upbeat pieces, to depict hectic life on Earth, we then lift off slowly by means of a set of tracks focused on soloing, soundscapes, layered sequencing and space sounds. As we reach the edge of the solar system, several deep contemplative atmospheres invite us to consider the distance travelled and the long journey ahead....I'll leave the scenery of the places visited to the listener's imagination! In short, a pleasant floating audiotrip just under two hours, to be enjoyed day and night, lounging in the shade or stargazing on your back.
Special mention for a fantastic retro track by Xan Alexander in pure Berlin School style, a bit of electric guitar bombast by Otarion aka Rainer Klein and a pick from ex-Tangerine Dream member Peter Baumann's latest album "Nightfall"."

Whitelabrecs Vinyl Mix
Wednesday Jul 09, 2025
Wednesday Jul 09, 2025
Without question one of the best ambient record labels in the world is Whitelabrecs . I've known label owner, Harry Towell, for a long time, going back to his netlabel days with Audio Gourmet. It's been grand to follow along as Harry has grown musically and the label has become a juggernaut. That's why I am beyond excited to present a guest mix from Harry. The bonus is it's an all vinyl mix.
Here's a little blurb from Harry about his mix:
"My name’s Harry and I make music as Glåsbird. I’m from Lincolnshire in the UK and I also run a record label called Whitelabrecs. The label has been going since 2016 and specialises in limited edition runs of vinyl effect CDrs in classic vinyl sleeve formats, such as the gatefold LP and mini 45. Vinyl is a massive inspiration for this label and this all started in my earlier years in music, when I was a DJ. I’d collect a range of Deep House, Techno and Downtempo records and mix these at gigs, at a time when CD-Js and digital mixing was becoming the norm. I bought my Technics 1210s in 2004 as a second-hand purchase from another DJ. I’ve kept them all this time and they had deteriorated to the point where the tonearms would get stuck and so they had been gathering dust for a few years.
This year I got them repaired and serviced, replacing the cartridges and styli - now they’re in perfect working order! Since my former DJ years my music taste has changed considerably and this has been developed over the course of the last 15+ years, running the Audio Gourmet, Tessellate and Whitelabrecs labels which focus on quieter Ambient music. I’ll be doing more of these vinyl mixes from time to time and also have my first live DJ gig confirmed for September.
I recorded this vinyl mix one lunchtime after selecting and planning the first 10 tracks using the Camelot Harmonic Mixing method, which is a great way to create a natural-feeling melodic flow. It is a pretty reliable workflow but sometimes doesn’t translate – see the transition between tracks 2 and 3 as an example! I was enjoying this mix so much, that from tracks 11 onwards I switched to mixing on the fly, selecting tracks by ear.
I’d call this an Ambient mix overall but there’s a nice range of sub-styles in this selection, from drones and electronica, electro-acoustic and modern classical to folk and ethnic sounds."
Thanks, Harry, for creating this excellent set.
Cheers!

Kosmische Musik - A Starter's Guide Vol. 1
Wednesday Jun 25, 2025
Wednesday Jun 25, 2025
For some strange reason I have not been listening to as much pure ambient music as I normally do. I've been playing a lot of jazz lately. And I am still devouring a ton of electronic/berlin school music. So it's perfect timing that friend of the show, Erwin Broers, has come up with a pair of awesome mixes in the genre.
I'll let Erwin tell you all about this new mix:
"Here's a follow-up on my Fall 2024 mix "Back To The Roots Of Berlin School". As you recall it featured a collection of electronic music tracks from the 1990s, that were inspired by the patterns, sounds and analog instruments of the 1970s and early 1980s. Back then, nobody talked about "Berlin School Electronic Music". That label would only appear somewhere mid 1990s, probably to honour the place where the genre was born. Fans in the early days would rather use the term "Kosmische Musik" (German for "Cosmic Music"). An explanation for the "cosmic" element is to be found in the use of the step sequencer, which made it easy to create hypnotic rhythm loops with up to 32 notes or steps, set a tempo, and mix them over electronic drones, soundscapes, soloing, washes, white noise and space sounds. The effect was to “float” the listener through endless terrestrial or cosmic space. For those not keen on using illicit substances, it was an interesting and harmless alternative "trip"!
So I thought about creating a mix of some classic pieces from that first era, but soon found out one mix would not be enough to do justice to all the fantastic "Cosmic Music" that was made back then."
This is an amazing trip that couldn't be contained in a normal hour-long mix so we get 2hours of electronic bliss. Thanks Erwin!
Cheers!

Dark Woods by Daniel Hawkins
Tuesday Jun 03, 2025
Tuesday Jun 03, 2025
I've fallen behind a bit on creating and uploading mixes. But have no fear, it's Daniel Hawkins to the rescue! He's come up with a guest mix at just the right time. You'll remember Daniel form his previous mix, "Metallic Memories" - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/metallic-memories/
For this set he takes us into the modern classical realm. Here's what Daniel has to say about this new mix:
"I was thinking about some of the nice Neo-classical/crossover stuff I like and then got to thinking about the way having a label for a style of music can actually be a limiting factor. The best creative work in any field so often transcends genres and labels and breaks new ground - Issak Dinsen said “A work of art is a thing of infinite loneliness and the least to be understood through criticism.” I remember back in the 1970’s playing Keith Jarret’s solo piano albums and my friends asking what kind of music it was. What do you say? Back then they stocked it in the jazz section of the record store with the other ECM releases, but I have never thought of that body of work as jazz. Music continues to evolve - Ambient? Chillout? Drone? Electronic? Tribal? Names and more names. So what do you call this collection of cello music? Is it classical because it features an instrument that is typically found in an orchestral setting? Personally I don’t think we need a label. I know good music when I hear it. The mix leans to the somber side - something strings do so well - deep and evocative. Explorations of the dark night of the soul."
Thanks, Daniel, for another excellent mix!
Cheers!
